Feel free to saturate the bluegrass with your tears, Cat fans. Wait ’til next year.
Remember all those times people said, ‘where would this team be without Patterson?’ Now, unfortunately, we’ll find out.
A letter to the Vols February 29, 2008

Dear Tennessee Volunteer fan,
Let’s have a little talk. You’re getting to the age where you think you know everything and you have a real problem listening to your superiors. I think if we just sit down and have a chat - and I promise I won’t yell - then we can make it through this weekend without you making yourself look stupid on a Kentucky message board or out in public. Let’s just establish a few things.
First of all, I understand how you kids get when you get ranked and have a little bit of success. I was a newbie to success once, even though it probably seems like a million years ago to you - I mean with all of the NCAA Championships, SEC Championships, All-Americans, etc. that I have. But, that’s not what matters right now. Just know that I understand that you are excited about your ranking. You should be. It probably won’t happen again for a really long time. You see, that’s what happens with gimmicks. Just ask UNLV or Michigan or Arkansas. Programs stick around and gimmicks eventually fade away.
Now, as far as this whole “rivalry” thing goes, don’t go making yourself look like an idiot by making it sound as if you are my equal. I have a major problem considering a program who has won less than 33% of its games against me a rival. It’s kind of like considering those ants in your back yard a worthy adversary - you know that once they get a little out of and control and overstep their boundary, you just go outside and take care of them. That’s kind of like how it is with you. I mean, think about it. You are enjoying the best success of your whole life and I’m going through a rough patch, but yet your superstar coach still has a losing record against me. That has to hurt, right?
And listen, let’s get serious about this whole Chris Lofton thing. I’m happy for the kid, I really am. But if you give me a chance to take Rajon Rondo over him again, then I’d do it 100 times out of 100. And if you still think you’re the smartest kid in the class for snatching up Mr. Lofton, then go ahead and celebrate. High fives all around. In fact, give me a fist pound because I don’t think I ever properly celebrated Tony Delk and Ron Mercer and their two titles they delivered to Lexington. C’mon man, blow me up. Seriously.
Look, it will be just fine this weekend if you learn to stay within your boundaries. All you have to do is just act like you’ve been there before and you won’t have to worry about anyone hitting below the belt and making fun of your court being named after a woman or your most famous alumni being a giant douche with a penchant for sexual harassment.
God bless and I’ll see you Sunday you rotten SOBs.
Sincerely,
The Kentucky Basketball Program

Single, overly fake-tanned, obnoxious 47 year-old man in Knoxville seeks young, juggy blonde at least half his age. Ideal mate will enjoy using mid-major, attention-grabbing tactics like orange sports coats and painted chests to cover up shortcomings and inadequacies of the Tennessee basketball program, and cannot be offended by the groping of sideline reporters on national television. Must also enjoy gimmicky offenses, failing in March and a losing record to Kentucky. If interested, contact HottBruceUT69@aol.com

Ohhh man, they didn’t fall for the fake pass…
We’ve seen a lot of big performances in the last week, starting with Beasley’s 44 and Walker’s 31 in a loss; then, Houston’s Robert McKiver scored 52; last night, Notre Dame’s Luke Harangody had 40 in a losing effort, as Louisville imitated their rivals (that’s us!) by letting a commanding lead slip away. (AP)
UT hasn’t lost at home this year, they’re revenge-minded, and they’re angry over the Vandy loss that will result in an inevitable poll plunge. They plan to take it out on us. (Courier-Journal)

Take me out to spring training… February 29, 2008
Posted by Thomas Beisner in Kentucky Baseball, Uncategorized.add a comment

Yesterday got a little busy, and I know you were out dancing your tail off Jerry Jones, but Major League Baseball kicked off their spring training with a full day of games. Former Wildcat Joe Blanton got the coveted opening day of spring training start against the Brewers yesterday and went for two strong innings, only allowing six runs. C’mon man, it’s only spring training. I’m sure he will turn it around. Another former Wildcat and Cy Young winner, Brandon Webb (above), will toss for the Diamondbacks today against the White Sox at 3:05.
Just as a side note, if you ever get the chance to attend spring training, then do it. It is one of the most underrated things I’ve ever experienced and you don’t really understand how cool it is until you get there. For a minimal price (usually 6-20 bucks), you can basically be on the field and the players come right up and talk to the fans. It’s a reallly cool, laid back environment. Anyway, check it out sometime if you can - and probably before Griffey retires. The guy is greatness.

The Arena Football League will kick off its season (and ESPN will start trying to cram it down your throat) tonight at 10:30 when the New Orleans VooDoo travel to Los Angeles to take on the Avengers. Hopefully, you’ll have something better to do, but if you have a jonesin’ for a little pigskin, then this might just be the remedy. Here are the former UK players who will be taking part in the AFL’s much anticipated season.
Aaron Boone, WR, Utah Blaze
Chris Demaree, FB/LB, Kansas City Brigade
Stephen Scaldaferri, K, Grand Rapids Rampage
Willie Gary, DB, Georgia Force
Omar Smith, OL/DL, Tampa Bay Storm
Craig Yeast, WR, Georgia Force
Matt McCutchan, OL, Los Angeles Avengers
Ellery Moore, DL, Chicago Rush
Antonio Hall, OL, Chicago Rush

UK’s 8th Championship: So, you’re saying there’s a chance? February 28, 2008

Are the Cats a tourney team? That is pretty debatable at this point, but barring a colossal collapse, it looks like they will be included in the Big Dance. So, for a school that is all about hanging banners, that means one thing - can they win the national title?
While pretty stupid to consider, it’s not completely out of the question - at least not in the eyes of the people at Bodog, who’ve placed the Wildcats’ national championship odds at 100/1. Certainly not good, but…well, actually that just flat out sucks. There really isn’t a bright side, unless you realize that about 4 or 5 weeks ago even considering the possibility of Kentucky making the tournament would require taking a couple of hits off of what Willie Williams was smoking.
So, who are the favorites? I give you the top 10, with UK’s other opponents included for good measure:
4/1 - UCLA
5/1 - North Carolina
5/1 - Kansas
6/1 - Memphis
7/1 - UConn
8/1 - Tennessee
9/1 - Duke
10/1 - The Filthy Cards
15/1 - Georgetown
16/1 - Kansas State
Other UK Opponents
Alabama - 300/1
Auburn - 400/1
Florida - 100/1
Georgia - 300/1
Houston - 300/1
Indiana - 30/1
LSU - 500/1
Ole Miss - 300/1
Mississippi State - 100/1
South Carolina 500/1
Vanderbilt - 40/1
By the way, Tubby and the Gophers are 300/1…where are you putting your money?
It’s certainly possible… February 28, 2008

Richard Pitino: lashing out?
In Pat Forde’s most recent Forde minutes column (#38), there was mention of a Big East coach getting in a scuffle with an assistant. Of course, this is all according to an unnamed source, but Forde apparently thought it was solid enough to print. This story has made its rounds on the message boards, but there is no solid evidence of who was actually involved, or if it even occurred.
However, over at The Big Lead, an interesting scenario is presented: Pitino had to change his flamboyant white suit at halftime of the Georgetown game, a game in which hundreds of media members had attended. Is there a chance that Pitino was cold-cocked in the locker room? Was it Richard?
Although a completely unsubstantiated rumor, I would love to hear Pitino spin this story. I assume that I would go something like this:
Well, Richard was imitating Georgetown’s usual style of play; you know, physical, with lots of punching. And, well, he ended up catching me on the nose. I’m from New York, so I’m used to seeing this type of thing on the streets, but I didn’t expect it from my puny son!
The room would then erupt in laughter, and the story would go without notice.
However, it definitely conjures a hilarious image of an irate Pitino, leaning over his sobbing son screaming, “Nothing gets blood out! Nothing! On the one night that I wear I white suit! I just can’t have nice things!”

Is it just me or is the sun shining a little brighter today? It has nothing to do with the Cats avoiding the biggest choke job since this, but rather with the fact that 28 years ago today, God did some great work. He gave the world Tayshaun Durell Prince, a “do-it-all” player, if there ever was one.
Any mention of Tayshaun must provide the standard two videos. First, here he is knocking down five (five?!?!) straight 3 point shots to start the UNC game, still one of the craziest moments I’ve experienced at Rupp, and then the blocked shot that sent the Pistons on their run as an elite team. But, did anyone know that Tayshaun was such a sweet salesman? I guess he really does do everything.

You gon’ eat yo’ rebounds?
Again, I allowed the Wildcats to lull me into a false sense of security.
They quickly sprint out to a 23 point lead, but, just as quickly, the lead evaporates and Ole Miss has a great look for the win. Was anyone surprised?
I admit, when we had the huge advantage I thought we would finally run away with a blowout win. However, I was not at all shocked to see Ole Miss storm back behind the shooting of Chris Warren and the offensive rebounding of Dwayne Curtis.
Alas, another win. Anytime the combination of a grainy Jefferson Pilot/Lincoln Financial/RAYCOM feed and the always dynamic Larry Conley and Tom Hammond results in a W, there’s no need to ask questions.

In one of the smartest moves ever made by an NBA general manager, Jamaal Magloire was signed to a one-year contract today by the Dallas Mavericks.
Mavericks president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson said about the deal, “We’re very fortunate to be able to acquire Jamaal Magloire. We were concerned about our backup center spot after the trade and this will provide us some much needed depth.”
And by backup, he meant go-to guy.
I said it here Monday and I’ll say it again now. Mavericks go 16-0 in the playoffs and Magloire wins MVP honors.

AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
As a Cincinnati reject, Andy Kennedy learned the importance of having a completely baffling team. Undefeated in their non-conference games, Ole Miss is 4-8 in the SEC. What does this say about the SEC? Does it mean that the basketball conference mirrors the power of the football conference? Is the Ole Miss record merely a reflection of a good team that is not ready for the rigors that this conference presents?
No. It means none of those things. Basically, all it means is that Ole Miss is falling apart at the same time that they are playing SEC teams.
However, they are an odd team. They lost at UT by two and beat Vandy. They got bludgeoned last weekend by LSU. They’ve lost to Auburn twice, yet beat Arkansas and Mississippi State.
I suppose the Kennedy approach, perfectly encapsulated by the photo above, can either drive his players to greatness or bury them in their insecurities. In the event that his screams and painful expressions ignite his squad, UK will have to rely on Patterson to exploit the shorter, yet not smaller, Rebels down low. So, if we could get a bunch of fouls on him, that would be great.
If you are able to watch this game during the commercials of Wife Swap, which is not nearly as cool as it sounds, you will likely see another close game that Kentucky must win (read: aneurysm). As I said yesterday, all Vandy’s win does is put pressure on us to keep from slipping up. A loss tonight would be devastating.
Let’s hope that the Ole Miss we see is the hapless bunch that was embarassed in Baton Rouge. Otherwise, it will be a “resurgent” performance that Larry Conley will babble about at great length. That won’t be good for anybody.

Unfortunate photo for Ramar.
Perhaps that is an overstatement, but UT is definitely one of the stupidest. Their inability to get Lofton the ball down the stretch, as well as the 15 billion fouls combined to sweep the Vols off of the top spot. They also take the worst shots ever. I hope they enjoy the rest of the week as the default number one, I don’t suspect that we’ll see them there again.

Here’s a wrap of the UT/Vandy game. Some points made are valid, others are asinine. Lofton less-than-advertised? He holds the record for most 3’s; perhaps he’s slumping. (College Hoops Journal)
Well, this is awkward. (Sports Pickle)
In case you haven’t heard, you will no longer get to see Sean Salisbury verbally abuse John Clayton on ESPN. (The Big Lead)

NFL Combine Report: Andre Woodson February 27, 2008
Posted by Thomas Beisner in Kentucky Football.Tags: NFL Draft
2 comments
On Monday, I promised a player-by-player recap of the NFL Combine and an analysis of each player’s performance. Well, in my never ending quest to sabotage this website and make it suck, I didn’t produce.
So, what does this mean? First, I’m a disgrace. Second, Jacob Tamme is a lucky S.O.B. and ended up with his own special profile for a couple of days. And finally, you’re about to have the happiest hump day of all-time. If this NFL Combine report doesn’t make you want to throw on your #3 jersey and throw passes to yourself in the front yard, then you, sir, have no soul.
Andre Woodson - Woodson measured in at 6’4”, 229 pounds and had arm and hand measurements of 32 ½” and 9 5/8“, respectively. His arms were the 9th longest of the quarterbacks and he had the 6th biggest hands.Scout’s take: NFL scouts love the way Woodson throws the deep ball and the the way he is able to move in the pocket, considering his size. They are also impressed with his ability to read the defense and to manage the game. Woodson’s ability to play well against the Cover 2 and the way he hangs in the pocket and takes a hit rather than forcing a throw also intrigue NFL scouts.
The major drawbacks on Woodson, outside of his much publicized mechanical issues, is that he doesn’t have the leadership qualities that teams look for in a quarterback. They are also concerned with his tendency to fumble. As far as his mechanics, they worry that his slow release and that raising his elbow above his shoulder will put him at risk for a large number of sacks and that
NFL Comparison: Jason Campbell, but those who see him as a bust project him as an Akili Smith type QB because of his lack of confidence and questionable leadership. I don’t really have anything to add to theses comparisons other than I didn’t realize that the Jim Crow laws applied to NFL Draft prognostication. Would it kill someone at some point to compare him to a white quarterback? Or are these two guys so rare that there is no such comparable caucasion?
Woodson’s status is a bit up in the air right now. While most teams view him as the quarterback with the most upside, many also see him as a total bust. He can go anywhere from 15th overall to the end of the third round. How his draft stock moves in the coming weeks should be a good story to follow.
Go Vols? February 26, 2008
Posted by Evan in NCAA news at-large.2 comments

In case you didn’t know, UK still has an outside chance at being the outright SEC Champions. Of course, we’d have to win out, beating UT in Knoxville. Besides that, the Vols would have to lose once more, something they may not do again this season. However, there is hope. So why would we want UT to win tonight?
Reality. We’re not going to win out. Unfortunately, Vanderbilt is white-hot and only one game behind us in the standings. While there is validity to the argument that we could still win the championship outright, it’s much more likely that we will get second in the East, but still drawing a first-round bye in the tournament. Surprisingly, that two seed provides us with a much simpler road to the SEC championship game.
If the season were to end right now, our first tourney game would be the winner of UGA and Auburn. If we win that, we would play the survivor of MSU, Florida, and Alabama in the semifinals. However, if we were to take the one seed, we’d begin with the Ole Miss/USC winner, followed by either Arkansas, Vandy, or LSU. Clearly a much tougher road, especially with the way both Arkansas and Vandy are playing right now.
I realize that a lot of basketball remains and a lot can happen between now and the end of the season, but the best (and most likely) scenario would begin with a UT win tonight. Sure, winning the SEC would all but lock up and NCAA bid; however, we can make some serious noise in the tournament as a two seed.
