We need seven days to prepare for Norfolk State? February 25, 2008

Does this smile make me look douchy?
In a move that will undoubtedly create copious amounts of bitching throughout the commonwealth, Kentucky is refusing to adhere to both UL and ESPN’s wishes to play the annual football game on Monday night. Barnhart is citing the quick turnaround his young team would have to endure following the Monday night game, as UK plays host to the always dangerous Norfolk State Spartans.
Louisville, who is no stranger to playing meaningless mid-week games, is drooling at the opportunity for this stage–as well they should be. However, for whatever reason, Kentucky is not. Last year, Miami and Florida State played on Labor Day night (Labor night?) and every single ESPN outlet was carrying the game, down to Colin Cowherd babbling over the action. Why doesn’t UK want this? Am I missing something?
The “short week” excuse is ludicrous. We could play Norfolk State 45 minutes after the UL game and still win. I’m all about telling Jurich to “get bent,” but this would be good exposure for us too. I will rarely agree with anything done by the UL athletic department to the point of being absolutely irrational, but I think we should honor their wishes. They let us move the game last year, now we should let them schedule it when they want.
We’ll just have to work extra hard during the week to prepare for the mighty Spartans.
I agree. Plus UK would have an excuse if they play a less than stellar game, knowing a potential loss is out of the question.
I agree that UK’s stance on this is suspect but selfishly, I’d much rather the game be on Sunday night as planned. Otherwise, I will be slugging through a workday the day after while the celebratory/consolation booze sweats through my suit. Barnhart just needs to have better excuses before he speaks. Or maybe just say “No, we aren’t going to do it that way b/c that is what UL wants.” That is reason enough for me.
It’s stupid not to play this game on Monday night. After that historic 7-5 season (which followed an equally historic 7-5 season), I guess Mitch wants to play the arrogance card. Nice work.
8-5, a-hole!!!!!
