A letter to the Vols February 29, 2008

Dear Tennessee Volunteer fan,

Let’s have a little talk. You’re getting to the age where you think you know everything and you have a real problem listening to your superiors. I think if we just sit down and have a chat - and I promise I won’t yell - then we can make it through this weekend without you making yourself look stupid on a Kentucky message board or out in public. Let’s just establish a few things.

First of all, I understand how you kids get when you get ranked and have a little bit of success. I was a newbie to success once, even though it probably seems like a million years ago to you - I mean with all of the NCAA Championships, SEC Championships, All-Americans, etc. that I have. But, that’s not what matters right now. Just know that I understand that you are excited about your ranking. You should be. It probably won’t happen again for a really long time. You see, that’s what happens with gimmicks. Just ask UNLV or Michigan or Arkansas. Programs stick around and gimmicks eventually fade away.

Now, as far as this whole “rivalry” thing goes, don’t go making yourself look like an idiot by making it sound as if you are my equal. I have a major problem considering a program who has won less than 33% of its games against me a rival. It’s kind of like considering those ants in your back yard a worthy adversary - you know that once they get a little out of and control and overstep their boundary, you just go outside and take care of them. That’s kind of like how it is with you. I mean, think about it. You are enjoying the best success of your whole life and I’m going through a rough patch, but yet your superstar coach still has a losing record against me. That has to hurt, right?

And listen, let’s get serious about this whole Chris Lofton thing. I’m happy for the kid, I really am. But if you give me a chance to take Rajon Rondo over him again, then I’d do it 100 times out of 100. And if you still think you’re the smartest kid in the class for snatching up Mr. Lofton, then go ahead and celebrate. High fives all around. In fact, give me a fist pound because I don’t think I ever properly celebrated Tony Delk and Ron Mercer and their two titles they delivered to Lexington. C’mon man, blow me up. Seriously.

Look, it will be just fine this weekend if you learn to stay within your boundaries. All you have to do is just act like you’ve been there before and you won’t have to worry about anyone hitting below the belt and making fun of your court being named after a woman or your most famous alumni being a giant douche with a penchant for sexual harassment.

God bless and I’ll see you Sunday you rotten SOBs.

Sincerely,

The Kentucky Basketball Program

God’s University.

2. diggs - February 29, 2008

Hey Tenn-a-key multiply your regular season SEC championships by 5 (yes 5….if you win every year for the next 35 years you can tie) and then win a few more still and then come holler…..wait, better yet, take your SEC tourney championships double them and then add them to every other team in the conference and then you still need to win a few to catch up. Enjoy your season.

3. TheGoldfishCowboy - February 29, 2008

This is the kind of thing I thought about posting during football season… but decided it wasn’t needed, you know, because if one actually is superior, there’s no real reason to spell it out.

If there’s doubt, however, I’d go ahead and cover my bases too.

All in good fun. See ya Sunday.

4. Peyton Manning - February 29, 2008

Only two things that amount to crap came our of Kentucky. Ashley Judd has em both.

5. diggs - February 29, 2008

sorry we arent unrealistic and dont think our football program has arrived and surpassed UTs in football. you guys are morons and are so inflated in your opinions i just cannot wait till your 1-3 year stretch is done. you are the arkansas of the 90s.

6. diggs - February 29, 2008

UT fan: “Only two things that amount to crap came our of Kentucky.” what?????? you and tyler smith need to pick up a book.

7. Frank Strovel III - March 1, 2008

What KY’s done in the past means SQUAT now. Resting on your laurels now is pretty laughable. Invoke the ghost of Rupp all you need to. It won’t help you now.

8. wkuvol - March 1, 2008

Thanks for the history lesson Beez. Man you guys get touchy when your one trick pony athletic department has a downturn in it’s only successful team. Now take your beating like a man and let the “Wait ’til next year..” talk begin.

9. michael minnehan - March 1, 2008

Here and now friends, here and now! Past doesn’t matter for either team.

10. Bert Bates - March 1, 2008

I guess that was your attitude about Florida BB the last two years. Ky BB reminds me of a real old lady eyeing a young, beutiful, bikini-clad girl, knowing her time is in the past and that she will never again expirence the joy of life she once did. Sorry, ky, but you are no longer relevant.

11. Andy - March 1, 2008

Here is the truth you pompous ass, if Vol fans always cared as much as UK did about men’s hoops the rivalry would be more even. Football is a man’s sport and basketball is a coed sport. We beat you in both.
Enjoy spring practice and watching the tourney on TV.

12. Evan Hilbert - March 1, 2008

We beat you in basketball.

13. sweasyf - March 1, 2008

Wow, this looks like a family get-together. Insults all around. UT, enjoy your time on top, it really is fun to be there. I hope you represent the SEC well and make it three in a row for us. The ACC/Big East types would have to choke on their words of how its a “down” year in the SEC.
Yes, we are going through a bit of a down spell this year. From what I see though, things are looking mighty good for the future. Don’t count us out just yet, in a year to two we’ll be adding to those 43 conference titles. Till then, best of luck UT, except for this weekend (although your chances there just got better with Patterson out for the year). Starting next week (unless we meet in the SEC tourney) I’ll be pulling for UT to take it all. Go Cats, Go Vols

14. nunnya - March 1, 2008

Ok. I am lost. Who is the giant douche?

We are very proud of our court that is named after THE WOMAN! She’s made quite a bit of money and she could mop the floor with you.

And we are so glad you like Rijon Rundo so much…

15. Tennesee and Kentucky preview - March 1, 2008

[...] -Letter to the Vols from Wildcatblitz. Kentucky fans sound more and more like Bammer fans to me….. delusional. Note they don’t have much to say about this season or even much about the game. It’s all about the past. Good luck to them in the NCA…er, NIT. I hope you guys get a good draw. [...]

16. Dee - March 1, 2008

Hey Diggs, look at it this way, least you guys have an excuse to use this weekend now, when you get blown out. By the way, to you and the kensucky basketball program, our most famous alumnus has an MVP trophy from the super bowl. Sorry, didn’t mean to lose you, that’s called football

17. Brett - March 2, 2008

Dear Thomas,

The last time I looked, that 33% success rate is a tad bit better than that 0% success rate (0-23 and counting) your football program has had against us since the mid-80s. I used to think UT’s basketball program was equivalent to your football program…both terrible underachievers who couldn’t really be taken seriously by UT football fans and UK basketball fans. But I know better from the vitriol hurled at my friends and I while at Rupp in the five times I’ve been there. The men’s basketball team at Tennessee is, has been historically and will forever be, a more competitive challenger to UK than the Kentucky football is, has been historically and will forever be to UT. And deep down, most Big Blue fans would admit it. When back-to-back Music City Bowl titles constitutes your greatest success of the last 30 years, it’s more sad than anything.

Almost as sad as that impending hollow feeling of half-heartedly cheering for your team’s upcoming NIT run. Have fun with that. Lord knows you have nothing else to cheer for at Kentucky.

18. aurabass - March 2, 2008

The past is never considered when they fill out the brackets or give out titles and trophies - each year starts anew and stands on it’s own.
After Gardner-Webb and San Diego it’s good to see that Billy Clyde finally figured out how to win at home in time to post 10 6 point wins and make today’s game count for something. But as evidenced the trip to Vandy it’s clear that the road is unhealthy for wildcats and inflated blue egos.
I haven’t noticed anyone challenging your impressive past. It’s nice to have when the present is so mediocre. But remember, that “woman” you disrespect named Summitt who’s name adorns our court? It is she who holds all the records for wins and titles in SEC Division One Basketball -and ALL THE ACTIVE RECORDS including reigning champ for NCAA Div one. Now that’s an undisputed history of domination unlike any in the sports world. Greatness doesn’t depend on gender and Bruce and the Tennessee men appreciate greatness without snide sexist slurs.

Once upon a time - KY had a single sport where they ranked ahead of their ‘rival’ to the south - once upon a time - but now there are none. I sympathize with your obvious pain.

Mr Beisner (and I use the term Mr loosely—-have you hit puberty yet.?)..You might add “petulant little insecure child” to the “frustrated athlete” moniker you gave yourself—I had to sign up for this site just to respond to the above pathetic attempt to make yourself significant. You remind me of the TENNESSEE Williams play, The Glass Menagerie….Living in the Past.
One need not be a shrink to analyze your insecurities in re UK Bball. Most of us respect the rivalry (my brother is a UK grad and lives in Lexington), at least most of us that are college educated. Times have changed, son. Alabama can’t hoard football player scholarships anymore ( too young to know what I am talking about.?…no, not the main subject of the sentence, I mean the definition of football ), and UK wont be able to dominate bball…too many good players, and too many going pro in a year.
If you and your buddy Evan “We beat you in Basketball” Hilbert think Pearl is a loser and flash in the pan, think again, check his record, and be afraid (oh, you already are , as your column so loudly screams), very afraid.Pearl is a reincarnation of Mears (15-15 against UK), only better.
Even your own UK fans, the intelligent ones, regret Lofton getting away. To denigrate his accomplishments by saying you are glad UK took Rondo over him , even if true, says everything there is to say about you. Lofton is such a credit to your state…Most Kentuckians salute him; You disrespected him, and most from your state would agree with me.
By the way, Peyton “Moon ” Manning…..sure am glad he is our douchebag.
To Mr (there I go again) Beisner…..one last thing….tell that loser Barnhart—-boy, are we glad he is yours…to upgrade that non-coference football schedule. We played Gonzaga, Memphis, Xavier, Texas, West Va all away from home and have the #1 RPI rating in bb; I see that Mitch has upgraded the football schedule to Akron, Temple, and Norfolk State, in addition to the power of the little east ….How in the hell, and I really mean this, can you get ANY worse teams on the schedule ? How exciting….Back to Back Music City Bowl Champ fans deserve better.
To all my UK friends, and I have a lot, ….demand better from “Mr ” Beisner

20. Thomas Beisner - March 2, 2008

Dear Coward,

Thank you for leaving your name. I’ll make this simple and just bullet the flaws with your argument.

1. Thanks for the Alabama sports history. I’ll make sure I file that under “other crap I don’t care about” and save it for the next time I need to wipe myself.
2. I did check Bruce Pearl’s record. After his lucky win today, he now stands at 3-3 against Kentucky, which is very reminiscent of Mears and his .500 record against the Cats. I’m glad you can appreciate mediocrity.
3. Check what I said about Lofton. I said “I’m happy for him”. It’s good that a two-star recruit can develop into such a solid contributor and all-around, I’m sorry I mean one-trick pony, player. BUT, given the choice again, I’d take Rondo. So would every other coach in the nation - including Buzz Peterson and Bruce Pearl and whoever else. Hindsight is 20/20 and Tennessee fans (and TV commentators) have crafted quite the tall tale in regards to him. And, I’d love to point out where I disrespected him - other than saying he wasn’t as good as Delk and Mercer, which happens to be an absolute fact.
4. I think it’s awesome that you guys played Gonzaga and Xavier in football - especially considering Xavier did away with their program roughly a quarter century ago. Good stuff, though. Maybe you should peruse your own writing for errors and ignorance like you did mine.
5. Hey dude, we suck in football. For the most part, we always have. And most likely, we always will. Glad you have to pull that card on a post about basketball programs. It just makes you look dumber.
6. I never even mentioned Peyton Manning. I said Woody Paige was a douche. You’re obviously a big time UT fan if you mistake them for each other.
7. And as far as my insignificance goes, it’s a funny thing. If by insignificant you mean that my writing and work on this website sucks so bad that no one should waste their time on it, then I think you might have made yourself look pretty stupid. I apparently struck a nerve with you, and everyone else that posted. That was the goal - to stir up a little fun before the big game. It worked - only most people got a chuckle, left a comment and moved on. You sir (I use that term loosely), sound like you need help.

I suggest you go talk to your brother about this sort of stuff. He’s obviously the smart one.

Go Cats.

21. Josh - March 27, 2008

If Brooks wasn’t so conservative and so stupid at the end of the Kentucky/Tennessee football game back in November. We would have beaten them, finally. We had the ball on the one yard line with one second to go. Why didn’t we go for the TD? They couldn’t stop us the entire 2nd half? That decision should have cost him his job. Once again, Tennessee extends their streak due to our inability to make good decisions. We choke way too many times.

As for basketball, Tennessee is the equivolent of a reality television star. They finally get some attention and about 15 minutes of fame and somehow they think they belong around the ranks of ‘A listers.’ Tennessee basketball is a joke and yet again, you will continue your streak of never making it to an elite 8. Now,please,go wear some more orange and visit Dollywood. God knows there isn’t anything else to do.
