“Mr. Wildcat”, Bill Keightley has passed away at age 81, according to a friend. Terrible news for Kentucky fans, and certainly a story we will continue to follow for you.
He fell off of a bus at the Reds game today.
Landon Slone agrees to walk-on March 31, 2008
Posted by Evan in Kentucky Basketball Recruiting.4 comments
Heeeeeeeeeere’s Landon!
Paintsville senior Landon Slone has agreed to walk-on at Kentucky next year, per WKYT. If you click the link it will take you to an interview that I can’t get to work, but maybe you can!
Slone is listed as 6′4″, which is 6′6″ in message board height, and he probably goes by “Lando,” or “the Landonator.”
Regardless, from what little I’ve gathered, Slone is described as a legitimate D-1 player, and he may be able to contribute from the outside as a shooter. He scored 35 against J-town in this year’s Sweet 16, going 12-19 from the floor. He has decent size and an incredible motor, so this should be excellent situation for both parties.
Horn to USC all but official *Updated* March 31, 2008
Posted by Evan in NCAA news at-large.4 comments
Wow. What a nerd.
Thanks to Rick Bozich being the crack reporter that he is, we now learn that the USC Board of Trustees has called a meeting for tomorrow morning. The reason? USC’s current coaching situation. Bozich had this to say on his blog.
Since there are no details, we’re working off assumptions here, but it’s a pretty safe bet. The only other coach who interviewed was OU head man Jeff Capel, and he turned it down.
Horn should be a good fit, though I’m only saying that because everyone else is. I know nothing about him, except Western won a few games in the tourney this year. If that, coupled with the nice things his players said about him, is any indication, he should be a good fit at a program itching to return to the Eddie Fogler days.
For Western, this is a tough break, but one the Topper faithful had to see coming. I would hate being the fan of a mid-major program. You can never get too excited over success, because if you have to much of it, someone comes and snatches your coach and you have to start all over again.
Unfortunately, Jon Brady has already been snatched up. I don’t know who that is unfortunate for, though.

Don’t be fooled by that Japanese stuff last week or that weak game last night between the Braves and Nationals. The real Major League Baseball season gets rolling today as 28 teams take the field for the only opening day I will formally recognize.
The astute Kentucky fan will have his eyes fixated on the game in Cincinnati where former UK ace and Cy Young winner Brandon Webb (above) will take on the greatest baseball team in the world, the Cincinnati Reds. Webb is the ace of the up-and-coming Diamondbacks, my pick to win the World Series, and aims to continue his steady yearly improvement, which peaked with last year’s 18-10 record and 3.01ERA. The first pitch is at 2:10 pm.
Sadly, Webb will not get to face former Wildcat Andy Green, who was reassigned to the minors by the Reds over the weekend. Green, a second baseman, had an up-and-down spring for the Reds but does get extra credit for predicting a UK basketball victory over Florida when I talked to him after a spring game in Sarasota a few weeks ago.
Another former Kentucky ace, Joe Blanton, will make his second start (I reluctantly count that Japan crap) tomorrow when the A’s welcome the Red Sox to town for the final games of their series that started in Tokyo. Blanton’s first appearance wasn’t the greatest performance in the world, allowing 3 earned runs in 5 2/3 innings pitched.
***In related news, that large man blowing the save for the Nationals last night was Jon Rauch, a former Oldham County Colonel. Rauch still recovered to pick up the win.

“Could YOU have made that 17-foot bank shot from the wing, fading-away with 3 hands in your face?”
I’m a little disappointed that it wasn’t Curry who hoisted a ridiculous three to end the game. Kansas played great defense, though, and that other dude’s (I have no idea who it was, and it doesn’t even matter) shot went begging.
All chalk. A Final 4 only a chalk-eating weasel like Big Brother could love. Should be exciting. Prepare yourselves for a week of painful over-analysis.

And here come the defections. According to WTHR, Jamarcus Ellis and Armon Bassett are gone. It’s not yet in stone, however. (WTHR)
Did Pelphrey do too well in his first year at Arkansas? This guy compares him to Tubby and Houston Nutt, but I think winning a national championship (or, in Nutt’s case, the SEC West) is a little different than getting blasted in round 2. Eric Crawford on UL’s Elite 8 run. I’m not so sure they weren’t top four at the end of the season; I will say, though, that any one of the one-seeds could beat them. Memphis impressed me, as did Kansas. So, I guess they weren’t. (Courier-Journal)

There was no Dwyane Wade, no Steve Novak and no Travis Diener, but Marquette still foiled a Kentucky comeback to advance to the Final Four yesterday afternoon. This time around, it was the Kentucky women (not pictured above) falling to Marquette in the Women’s NIT.
If you need more, then I’m sorry. I’m just so upset that I have to say goodbye to this senior class that I can’t write anymore. Just check out the official UK website for all of the details.
Today in Wildcat History… March 31, 2008

1975 - In John Wooden’s last game, the UCLA Bruins knocked off the Wildcats, 92-85, in the NCAA Championship game in San Diego. UCLA’s Richard Washington was named MOP in Wooden’s 10th title season. Here’s a good video.
1984 - Despite getting a double-double from Sam Bowie, and Melvin Turpin and Sam Bowie combining to hold Patrick Ewing to 8 points, Kentucky falls to Georgetown, 53-40, in their 9th Final Four appearance. Georgetown would go on to win the title, 84-75, over Houston and their big man, Akeem Olajuwon. Ewing would eventually be named MOP.
1997 - Without a hobbled Derek Anderson, the Wildcats fall to Arizona, 84-79, in an epic overtime game. Arizona’s Miles Simon busted out for 30 points in the finale to overcome a balanced Kentucky attack led by Scott Padgett’s 17. The Arizona victory ended Kentucky’s hopes of being only the second team to win back-to-back championships since the UCLA run in the 1970’s. Simon would be named MOP and this game would mark the last time Rick Pitino paraded the UK sideline as head coach.

And then try and get your refund.
Remember the super-sweet football “midnight madness” that UK had been pimping for the last couple of weeks? It was going to be the awesomest start to spring football ever!!
Apparently, it’s illegal to use college athletes in a profit-seeking event…or something. I didn’t read the whole thing.

What can I make up today?
Did Billy Packer just say that Ben Howland’s UCLA teams are the first since Adolph Rupp to have three straight 30-win seasons? Please, someone, enlighten me.
I would not be surprised if Packer did say this, because he’s an idiot, and his ACC brain can’t remember UK winning 30+ in ‘96, ‘97, and ‘98. Also, it appears the national media is ignoring the three straight years in the ’90’s that UK dominated. On Sportscenter this morning, there was a graphic of the teams who had reached the Final Four at least three straight years. In the graphic, they denoted how many national championships were won in that stretch. Next to Kentucky, it said “1.” I guess if Pitino didn’t win, it doesn’t count.
Luckily, this bloodbath is almost over. Hopefully Stephen Curry and Davidson can continue their magical run and be competitive with the Jayhawks.
In a completely unrelated note, does anyone else want to jab out their eyeballs when the creepy Subway commercial comes on? What does Godzilla have to do with over-priced sandwiches?

Oh, Lunardi, you card!
There is little room at the top of the Wildcat Blitz bracket challenge, with A-Train’s T-Baggage of the Bracket leading the way. In a three-way tie for second, we’ve got Coach Philly, Another Loser, and another loser, Beezner. I’m in 75th place, but I expect to make quite a charge in the Final Four.
The prize has yet to be determined, but if Beezner wins, I’ll let him do the links for a month!

Preston Knowles needs to work on his post D. (C-J)
I ridiculously deemed Wayne Ellington the best player on UNC’s team a couple nights ago. Tyler Hansbrough is the truth. His play late coupled with a myriad of Cardinal mistakes sent a very game Louisville team packing.
UNC looked very tough, and, I shudder to say this, they may have been the only team capable of beating Louisville. It can be argued that Kansas is better than UNC, which is possible, but I refuse to believe that Memphis or UCLA could have beaten UL tonight. They looked fast and talented, and lets hope all their players turn pro and Pitino leaves, and we’ll never speak of this again.

It’s been exactly 10 years since the “Comeback Cats” overcame yet another deficit to defeat Utah, 78-69, in the NCAA Championship game in San Antonio. The Cats used their defense, holding Utah to 4 FGs in the last 16 minutes and setting a tournament record for blocks, to give head coach Tubby Smith his first career title and UK’s seventh overall. Jeff Sheppard was named MOP and Scott Padgett joined him on the All-Tournament Team.
Heels and Cards: Let’s get it on! March 29, 2008
Posted by Thomas Beisner in NCAA news at-large.add a comment
The East region was heralded as the toughest heading into the tournament and, outside of Tennessee’s first two games, it has offered little in terms of close games or surprising upsets. The whole bracket has been leading up to Louisville and North Carolina and both teams have looked dominant heading into tonight’s game and I am getting excited for a great one. When I previewed the bracket, I had both teams in the finals and wrote this about the game:
“Ok, listen up kids. This is the only time I will use my big blue mouth to compliment or champion the Filthy Cards. This game is going to be the game on the tournament. Louisville, if they can actually keep themselves from playing with the basketball IQ of a 5 year-old, will give North Carolina a battle for their tournament lives. They match up very well and have the athleticism and size to thwart the UNC attack. I just don’t think it will be enough in the end. Thank God, disaster averted.”
I still stand firmly in regards to this being the game of the tournament. Lost in the hype of the Roy Williams vs. Rick Pitino verbal battles over homecourt is the fact that Louisville might be the team posing the biggest threat to UNC’s march to the NCAA title. These teams, despite their records, are very similar in terms of talent and both coaches are experienced in this situation. Here is how they break down by position:
Andre McGee/Edgar Sosa v. Ty Lawson
Lawson is one of the best in all of college basketball and North Carolina goes as Lawson does. And, while Sosa had a great tournament last year, he’s been plagued by poor decision-making and foul trouble in his sophomore campaign. Even when the Filthy Cards have Andre McGee running the point, who has played spectacularly so far, it’s still not enough to keep up with the Heels. This is the position where Carolina has the biggest edge.
ADVANTAGE: UNC
Jerry Smith v. Wayne Ellington
Nothing against Jerry Smith, but Wayne Ellington is a flat-out superstar. Despite Ellington being a slightly bigger player, he also provides much more quickness on the perimeter and a better knack for getting to the hole. Smith’s outside shooting always leaves the window open for a big game, but Ellington consistently plays to a high level and Smith might be in over his head tonight.
ADVANTAGE: UNC
Terrence Williams v. Marcus Ginyard
Everything I said above about Smith being capable, but not at the level of Ellington, applies in reverse to this matchup. Williams, who has been at U of L for around a decade it seems, is the heart and soul of the Filthy Cards and has an all-around game that puts him at an elite level in college basketball. If Williams plays with his head, then Ginyard is in for a long night.
ADVANTAGE: Filthy Cards
Earl Clark v. Deon Thompson
Juan Palacios will likely start, but he won’t log the majority of the minutes because of beast-man Earl Clark. If Clark was on Kentucky, he’d be the biggest story in the bluegrass. He is one of the most-skilled big men in the game and completely negates Thompson’s inside-outside ability that allows the Tar Heels to create matchup problems. Clark’s development over the course of the year is one of the main reason that the Filthy Cards have become the legitimate title threat (excuse me while I puke) that they are today. I have a pretty good feeling that Clark goes off and guarantees himself a spot in the NBA Lottery.
ADVANTAGE: Filthy Cards
David Padgett v. Tyler Hansbrough
I hope you’re a big fan of white guy-on-white guy action. Prepare yourself for tons of references to their “heart” and how they “bring their lunchpails”. Padgett, while somewhat serviceable on his gimpy knees, is not one-tenth of the player that Louisville fans think he is. And even they know that he has nothing on Hansbrough. Amazingly, the pick and roll that no one in the Big East could figure out how to stop, has become ineffective in the tournament and Padgett hasn’t been getting his wide open layups. Hansbrough has the game of his life. Padgett - and Palacios or whoever else - will get abused all night.
ADVANTAGE: UNC
BENCH
Palacios and Caracter are certainly good players for spurts and Preston Knowles has developed nicely this year, but the depth of North Carolina is simply amazing. Kentucky and Duke killer Danny Green and Alex Stephenson and Quentin Thomas are head-and-shoulders above the Louisville bench. Neither team likes to go very deep for long periods of time but, if forced to for fouls or whatever reason, the Tar Heels have the advantage.
ADVANTAGE: UNC
Rick Pitino v. Roy Williams
Both coaches are among the best in the game and both have one national title to show for it. While Williams had a strong history of choking when he was at Kansas, Pitino’s coaching ability over the past few years has definitely left room for questioning. The days of just recruiting talent and letting them play left guys like Pitino - great recruiters, less than stellar X’s and O’s guys - by the wayside. With the new rules requiring players to play at least a year, Pitino has found the magic again through just accumulating talent. But, in games like this where it might come down to strategy at the end, I like Williams to make the right move over Pitino.
ADVANTAGE: UNC
So, after breaking it all down, I’m still sticking with my original projection. This is going to be a great game, but I like the Heels to advance to the Final Four.
Jeff Goodman made it up… March 29, 2008

Charge!!!!!!!!!!!
According to ESPN’s Andy Katz, the Indiana job has not been offered to Washington State’s Tony Bennett, as Fox Sports’ Jeff Goodman had reported. However, the university is hopeful that they will find a coach by the Final Four.
In the ESPN article, Katz cites both Bennett and Washington State’s AD. Goodman cites “a pair of sources.”
I don’t trust Goodman. I’m surprised Goodman didn’t even attempt to speak with Bennett or Washington State before reporting the offer.
It will be interesting to see how this shakes out. Will Bennett be alienated from IU? Is Bruce Pearl even on their radar?
I will say, the masses in Bloomington seriously believe that Rick Pitino still wants to come north to the “wintry mix” capital of the universe.

Derby is 35 days away, and if you have a short attention span, or you just pick a number on Derby Day, PAY ATTENTION!
Since 1900, here are the success rates for Derby Post Positions:
1: 12 11: 3
2: 9 12: 3
3: 8 13: 4
4: 10 14: 2
5: 12 15: 3
6: 6 16: 3
7: 8 17: 0
8: 9 18: 1
9: 4 19: 0
10: 10 20: 1
Math done for you: 82% win percentage for the 1-10 horse on Derby Day
Best Post Positions: #1 & #5 (each won 12 times)
2nd Best Post Positons: #4 & #10 (each won ten times)
So, if you’re just gonna throw a dart on Derby Day, the horses beyond ten (10) probably aren’t worth your time. The last horse out of the auxiliary gate (posts 15-20) was Smarty Jones (15), and your guess is as good as mine for the one before him.
Fairly short and sweet today…I know there’s a lot of basketball to be discussed. Also, if you are at all a fan of Curlin, the greatest horse still running, he is running today in the $6 million Dubai Classic. Yes, $6,000,000.

Be warned. Curry has already ripped the heart out of Gonzaga, Georgetown and now Wisconsin. He’s already stolen LeBron James’ Duke-loving soul and replaced it with Davidson red. Some might say that his array of 3-point bombs and highlight-reel layups are miracles of God, but I think they’re rather un-Godly. I’m fairly convinced he’s made a pact with the devil and now he’s after the rest of us.

Caracter goes pro, no one notices March 28, 2008
Posted by Thomas Beisner in NCAA news at-large.7 comments
As Evan so duly noted in the links below, the enigma of enigma’s, the prodigal son, the walking Cardinal disaster, Derrick Caracter has declared for the NBA Draft. This news was met with absolutely no interest from anyone - especially the Cardinal fan base.
This might be the least heralded decision since I opted for Five Guys Burgers and Fries over Chick-fil-A yesterday on my lunch break and to be totally honest, I can’t find blame with the Cardinal fans. Caracter hasn’t brought much to the table in his time with the Filthy Cards besides a few flashes of greatness, usually followed up with a disappointing rule break or a dumb foul and I’m sure they’re ready for someone who is going to be consistent - or at least play hard.
The only question I have about his NBAdraft.net comparison to Robert “Tractor” Traylor is whether they think their games are the same or if Caracter is likely to end up running with drug lords in a few years like Traylor. I’ll take the latter based on public displays of immaturity.
So in the end Card fans, you just got slapped in the face by a guy who never appreciated the opportunity that was handed to him time after time. And now, you have at least one more game of a player that came in to the Filthy Cards under the accolades of possibly being Greg Oden’s equal, and now leaves with a handful of suspensions, a knack for fouling and a draft declaration aimed to get some attention for his fat, lazy ass in the middle of the greatest team success of his college career.
Maybe that’s why there isn’t as much fanfare. No one is surprised.
